Help with Wireless Network please
Hi. I actually got my wireless network to work somehow, even though the hardware I bought (Wireless Linksys router- WRT 160N and D-Link USB Network adapter) aren't specifically made for Linux, the rt37 driver is enabled in my Synaptic package manager. I was connected to the internet, wirelessly no problem, but then I started messing with my router settings etc., trying to set up a home webserver. Now I can't even connect if the wireless router is even connected to the computer with a cable. I have gone back to the old wired router. I reset the wireless router to factory settings (push pin in the back) and Linksys phone support helped me with some settings. But it still doesn't work. My ISP said they could help me...if only I had Windows Xp lol. They mentioned a 'network adapter refresh' or something. Would anyone know what to do? thanks very much

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
Hi,
I would like to know if you still have the rt37 driver installed? If so is your computer dectecting that you have a usb wireless device connected. Also, do you know if since the time that you hit the reset button, have you done a power cycle? This might be the answer to the problem all together. Cheers!

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
Cheers wmorri :) The adapter is listed, when I do a 'lsusb': Bus 001 Device 013: ID 07d1:3c03 D-Link System DWL-G122 802.11g Adapter [ralink rt73]
As for the driver being 'installed'...not entirely 'clued in' with Linux yet, but I'm assuming it is, as I see it listed (green box beside it) in the Synaptics Package Manager when I search it, rt73. If I have to do something besides that, not sure, and as for this: "have you done a power cycle?" I am sorry but I don't know what that means (off to google it now lol). Thanks so much for helping me..again! |

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
Hi,
Yeah, (waves hands in air) that is what I wanted to see, in re-guards to the usb wifi . As for the rt37 driver everything should be good if there is still the green dot next to it. The power cylce thing, i would take a look at this, it does a great job at describing it. Cheers!

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
LOL (actually saw u waving ur hands in the air ;) ) Ok, I will give it a good read, I started reading something already a bit- and don't worry, if I get confused I will sure ask u for clarification lol. First I have to go by rubber boots (has been snowing like mad here, and then melting into 'lakes'j!) but will be back later. Thanks wmorri, will beat this thing yet, then I can try NOT to mess it up again while trying to set up a server....oh no.

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
For sure :) And I really appreciate that as well. Finally found those rubber boots, will be tied up tomorrow, running around in them, so can't post back until Sunday some time about my 'progress' lol. Have a great weekend wmorri.

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
Ok, I went to you link and followed it completey. I still can't manage to get a wireless connection, I can only connect to the internet if the wireless router is connected to the computer with a cable. There is maybe something I have to do still.

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
Hi,
I want to clarify a couple one thing. One that you have the wireless router connected to the modem? I would also like you to try to uninstall the rt37 driver and then reinstall it. Doing a reboot between each. I want to see if that would make any difference. Sometime that is all that needs to be done. Cheers!

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
Yes, the wireless router is, at the moment connected to the computer physically in order to get internet right now. I will do what u suggest, hopefully that works. thanks.

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
Hmmm. this is getting frustrating :) I had to go back to using my previous router (wired, not wireless) in order to get internet. sometimes I can't even use the wireless when it is connected to the computer, sometimes I can, I don't understand it. I did the whole 'unpug computer/unplug mode and router and restart computer etc. etc. a few times. To reinstall router I simply went to Synaptic Package manager, clicked 'mark for removal' on the rt73, then rebooted, then clicked 'mark for reinstallation'. Hope that was right. I keep thinking that something is wrong with my wireless router, or the neetwork adapter, wlthoug I DID have it working before, and both are new.

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
Hi,
I am still here. I am going to do a little looking and see if I can come up with any problems with either of these devices. It might be a couple of days. But I will come back with an answer for you. Cheers!

Re: Help with Wireless Network please
Ah, ok thanks. I could probably save us the time and by new devices but I don't have the money right now (AND it was working before, so I don't know). No rush, it's Easter weekend anyway, and I have math to study as usual lol.
