Why does linux-2.6.10 kernel not supporting SATA AHCI in my system?

Hi all,
I 've downloaded the linux kernel source 2.6.10 . It has to support SATA AHCI for my ICH6 M chipset. So, i recompiled the kernel source and changed the BIOS settings (SATA in ENHANCED mode, and AHCI is ENABLED) .During booting, i 'm getting the following error msg.
Kernel panic:VFS:unable to moun root fs on unknown block(0,0).Help me if any one knows.Thank u.

Regards
Senthil

Can you post the motherboard model and vendor? Looks like an Intel mobo but I want to make sure... I'll dig around and see what I can find.

My System

Did you compile the SATA support as a Module or built into the kernel? If you did it as a Module, then you'll need to redo it so that it's built in.

What kernel did you have before?

OS: Fedora Core3

Intel controller AHCI mode

I just recompile my 2.6.10 kernel on Fedora core3 with AHCI built-in, but my Dell Dimension 8400 cannot boot.

Linux run only if I set SATA -> RAID Mode into the bios settings.
Linux don't run if I set SATA -> AHCI Mode into the bios settings.

Any idea to use AHCI performace feature??
thanks in advance.
