Using Ubuntu as a complete novice

In the meantime, I have bought 'Linux in easy Steps', ordered 'Linux for Dummies' and
'Ubuntu Linux for Dummies'. That last one may take four weeks for delivery via WH Smith or so they say when ordered on line.
Until I can see 'The Way Ahead' from the above, would you be so kind as to tell me how to:
See the HD (size, what is used etc) and all other HD drives.
See how to list the Floppy Drive
See how to defragment.(If this is necessary in Linux?).
See how to remove an installed program.
Skype is installed and appears to be working although have not actually made a call yet,
sometimes upon opening Skype the message comes up 'Another Skype Instance may exist'. This means am unable to Login.
Appreciate any help. Looks like I have a long, long learning period ahead with Ubuntu, but enjoyable I HOPE.
