I'm a newbie - how can I access internet from a redhat linux 9 computer?

Hi,

I have just installed Red Hat Linux 9 on my pc, (which had Win XP on it before) but i'm having problems accessing the internet - actually I can't go on the internet at all.
My pc is connected to a router and has broadband connection. I have just plugged in the network cable to the computer and I wrongly thought that I could go on the Internet immediately. (In fact, I only needed to plug in my network cable to my computer at the time I was using win XP, just to go on the Internet. Win XP did not require any changes in the configuration for that). Do I need to change the configuration of Redhat in order to access the internet? I am completely new to Linux, and I'll be much grateful if anyone can give me a step-by-step guide on how to do that.

Cheers.

I've never used RH9, but in the menu from the "hat" you should find "system", "configure my computer" (or something close). You will find menus for various things, one should be a configuration wizard for connecting to network. You'll get internet through a netwotk connection. Hope this helps.

What type of internet connection do you have? DSL? Cable? Something else?

This is a solution that was found elsewhere:

For a Gui try going to the systems menu & use the internet configuration wizard & pick xDSL. From the command line, as root, you can use the command "adsl-setup". You will be taken through either one step by step after launching them. I use adsl-setup when trying to creating a non-X-server firewall (still a work in progress ) & it works fine. You also have to have the program rp-pppoe installed to do either though, before I forget .
I found it here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/268669

I don't use RH 9, but it is a bit old. If you want to stick with RH, then I'd suggest installing Fedora as it's the newest version.
