Linux XP vitual machine

Hi im a total newbie to linux, I've recently taken a liking to it after all the good things i hear about it.

I downloaded linux xp because i thought it would be a good place to start and then found out its a virtual version. Is it possible to boot straight to it. Its 1.4gb and its hard to believe it cant be used as a boot OS.

im currently using WMware to run it but it has to run through xp. Ive also got Ubuntu installed but that works fine (dual boot with xp.)

Re: Linux XP vitual machine

You can't boot straight to it. It is like having a different motherboard in you computer, the OS has to be installed on top of the MB and bios.

I run Fedora Core 10 and have a VMware XP for my windows programs. On a machine at work I run XP/64 and have VMware the runs a Core 9. Works fine.

Hope this helps.

Re: Linux XP vitual machine

I'm guessing it can't be used as a self installed OS because it's actually not a free OS. You might think of trying another distro with less restrictions. If Linux XP is to your liking, Fedora might be a good place to look.

Re: Linux XP vitual machine

OpenSUSE is geared more for new users than Fedora, but I would expect either to be a decent starting place --depending on your level. Both are easy to install and leave room for custom configuration. Both have easy to use package management systems where dependencies are not really an issue. If I were to suggest one over the other, probably agree with the above post --OpenSUSE.
