Do I have to change from rl 3 to 5 & reboot to get into gnome?

Does any1 know of a way to get into gnome from bash prompt (run level 3) without changing the runlevel to 5 and rebooting?

'startx' should start your windowing system.

Typeing startx will start the default Desktop Enviroment (Gnome, KDE, etc). If you specifically want to go to a particular Desktop, using GDM will start Gnome, but will require a username/password. This should set Gnome as your default so you can use startx from then on. For KDE, it's either startkde, or kdm. I don't remember which.

If all you want this for is to switch to/from X, then using startx is the better option. Keep in mind though that there may be certain services that start during runlevel 5 which aren't started during runlevel 3. If these services are of no interest to you, then you can just stick with using startx.

Also, don't switch to runlevel 6 unless you want to reboot.
