Vista and Ubuntu: A dualboot problem

About a year ago, or maybe a little more, a friend helped me set up a dualboot of Vista and Ubuntu on my system. Now, this was all hunky-dorie, up until tonight.

I was going to install Windows 7 over my partition that used to have Ubuntu. I formatted the partition, and all was well. I burnt my Windows 7 disc, and then put it in. Restarted my computer, go to install Windows 7, and apparently the burning had a problem. So I took the CD out, go to boot my computer like normal, aaaand the systemthing that lets me dualboot, GRUB, or whatever it's called, (not exactly an expert on that) won't let me get past that part of startup because I formatted Ubuntu off my system.

I tried to use system restore, but my computer doesn't pick up when I spam the F11 key on startup.

What can I do to save my computer?

Oh, and for the loading error it says (and I quote):

"GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 17"

Re: Vista and Ubuntu: A dualboot problem

Google how to "repair mbr"
When you dual-booted Linux, the original Windows MBR was replaced with GRUB Stage 1.
It's a relatively simple task to reinstall the Windows MBR.

Hi,

Repairing the MBR is very simple as bartender has mentioned. I would recommend that you have a look at How to restore MBR in Vista. IT will walk you through the process.

Cheers!

Re: Vista and Ubuntu: A dualboot problem

It says at one point "If it is not as in this case then you will need to load the drivers for your SATA disk/hard drive by clicking on the Load Drivers button and browse to the location where the drivers are stored."

Where are drivers stored at?

Hi,

Can you give us a little bit more information than that. What point are you talking about?

Cheers!

In the guide you linked me to ( http://www.techsupportforum.com/cont...icles/170.html ) it says right after clicking repair computer to Load Drivers, but I don't know where they're stored.

Relooking over it, after I click next it tells me: "Insert the installation media for the device and click OK to select the driver."

What exactly is it asking for?

This is the section that you are talking about I believe. I don't see right click anywhere. If you have never installed or had to install SATA drivers then I wouldn't worry about it. This is just an step for those who have to.

SATA is a type of hard drive. It stands for Serial ATA. If your computer didn't come with any drivers for this I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I would just click on the OS that you want to use and then keep going, you should be fine.

Cheers!
