Problems with Ubuntu

Im having trouble installing ubuntu on my computer.
when i boot the computer and run it through cd drive, it has no problem bringing up the ubuntu installation screen, but when i try to install or run the distro, it tells me my kernel is incompatible. It says i need a i686 kernel and i have some weird one for a kernel, if i remembered the kernel i would tell u, so im sorry if i havnt been informative enough,

For some other information im running: WinXP, AMD Athalon XP 2400+ 2.00 ghz, 512megs of RAM, if theres any other system information that u need i'll try to get it for u.

If anyone can help me with fixing my kernel problem i would very much appreciate it.

wut i was really wondering was if i could install/configure the kernel on my own with XP, or am i going to have to install some other form of linux before i can do so.

lets start at the beginning .. there are 4 versions to download

Intel 32 bit & 64 bit and
AMD 32 bit & 64 bit

which did you download ??

edit
I'm not sure about the AMD 32 bit though .. just realised what i wrote I assume that there is an AMD 32 bit

Re: Problems with Ubuntu

I'm pretty sure you only need the AMD version if you've got a 64bit AMD processor.

funny thing was I didn't see an AMD listing .. however .. make sure you download(ed) the desktop version and not the server version.

Even if he isn't running a 32 bit processor installing a 32bit OS isn't going to hurt his performance too much.

It would be great if the OP could boot back into the livecd and then find out what the error is that he is getting. This will give us a better idea of where to start from. I personally haven't heard of there being any problems with any processor that people have installed on. So this is new to me.

Cheers!

Re: Problems with Ubuntu

Am I not correct that there is an AMD AND an Intel download for Ubuntu .. just can't seem to find it now that I want it .. but since there are two versions which were written to help enhance the CPU it would be possibly that the wrong one has been downloaded .. isn't it ? Never thought about trying to run an AMD version on an INtel but if I can find that download .. I will give it a try ..

What's the worst that can happen ??

Re: Problems with Ubuntu

Done, I don't know anything about two different versions of Ubuntu for each manufacturer. I have run the same system from the same livecd on the different computers with AMD and Intel procs and there hasn't been a difference. If you can find me an example of what you are talking about that would be great.

Cheers!

Re: Problems with Ubuntu

Right now I can't find what I had seen some time back .. maybe old age, failing sight and reading one thing but understanding something else

This is for Fedora which I thought was going to prove my point but then I saw it has both AMD & Intel together with POWER PC's (PPC) separate

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/Download

Quote:
Download Locations

The ISO images are located at the following URLs:

i386 (32-bit AMD, Intel Pentium, Intel Core Duo)
ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub...dora/i386/iso/
x86_64 (64-bit AMD64, EM64T, Intel Xeon, Intel Core 2 Duo)
ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub...ra/x86_64/iso/
PowerPC (32-bit and 64-bit classic Mac, 64-bit pSeries)
ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub...edora/ppc/iso/
I am now assuming that I THOUGHT I had seen a difference between download packages according to type .. although he may possibly have taken a Mackintosh version

Re: Problems with Ubuntu

Hi,

I understand about that. But that is with fedora we are dealing with Ubuntu. The only place that I see a different iso avalable is in the alternitive installer. But we don't need to get to far off topic for the OPs sake. Lets see if we can get the OP back and see what he can tell us.

The latest kernel is 2.6.28.1 I would look for something like that, or similar. Also, any errors that we can be given would be wonderful.

Cheers!
