Re: Whats the difference?
Hi,
I am not to sure of what you wanted. I thought that I would give you a little taste of each. This might help you with your issues, and help you undersand what each is like. I would also like to know what problems you were having installing things with Terminal, so that you don't get too pushed away. You will find the more that use linux that terminal will need to be your friend and not your fow. Red Hat: Red Hat is also known as RHEL or Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Is mainly known as the linux that is the industry standard. If you ask people about linux most people will say Red Hat. The other thing about Red Hat is that is isn't free. Red Hat is installed from Install disks that come with the OS not from a LiveCD, but the installer is Graphical. The main desktop is Gnome. Which is the one that resembles the Mac desktop. The package management system is RPM. Red Hat can be run on all types of processors. Mandriva: Mandrake doesn't exist anymore. It was changed to Mandriva a few years ago. Mandriva is a free OS. The installer is Graphical from a LiveCD. Mandriva is an OS from France. Mandriva is The main desktop is KDE which is similar to the windows desktop, but you can use Gnome. The package management system is RPM. It uses the urpmi package manager. Mandriva can run on 32bit and 64bit processors. Ubuntu: Ubuntu is probably the most popular of the distros of linux at the current time. Ubuntu is free OS. Ubuntu is installed Graphically from a LiveCD. Ubuntu is from the Isle of Man which is in the British Isles. The main os is Gnome, but you can use KDE is you want, or you can download the kubuntu version and then use the KDE desktop as default. The Package management is DEB. If you need to install something from terminal you would use apt-get. Ubuntu will run on all 32bit and 64bit processors. Plus it runs on power pc processors too. Fedora: Fedora is the free version of Red Hat. It was started when some people wanted to get the Red Hat reliability for free. The installation process is a Graphical process through a LiveCD. The main desktop is Gnome. RPMS are used for package management, and yum is used to install things through terminal. Fedora can run on all 32bit, 64bit, and ppc processors. Cheers!

Quote:
Linux GUI's have evolved to the point that the vast majority of tasks can be performed without the terminal, or maybe with just one or two terminal inputs required. It's there for the folks who want or need to use it. But for the rest of us it's not a part of our daily computing activity. wmorri - Ubuntu is from the Isle of Mann? Ubuntu is Mark Shuttleworth's baby, and he's South African. Oh, OK - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu Canonical is based in the UK. Didn't know that... |
