OS: Windows Vista service pack 1

Should I make Linux my OS instead of Vista?

I have been told by a few friends of mine that Linux is WAY more secure than Vista. Also, I keep having problems with Vista's data being corrupted. I know someone that can entirely reformat my Hard Drive and Put Linux on it instead of Windows Vista. I, Personally prefer Linux, but I am not sure it is a good idea... What should i do?

(btw: I use it for programming, Graphic design, and Web browsing with the occasional streaming video/music)

Re: Should I make Linux my OS instead of Vista?

You should consider dual booting rather than just going with Linux only. If you're a long time Windows user; you might find yourself wanting to go back to Windows from time to time. Dual booting gives you that option and if you end up using Linux only; you can always dump Vista later.

Linux is more secure than Windows and from a programming and web design stand point, better development OS as well. More tools available with (usually) easier access to them.

IMO, anyway.

Hi,
Rome has it all correct as usual :smile. I would recommend a dualboot also. Outside of what he has mentioned, if you are an avid gamer then you will have some difficulty with linux, but it can be done.

Cheers!

True. But it's only a matter of time until emulation software will be optimised enough to run almost anything you want. Even now, half of Windows games can be successfully emulated, and a half have Linux installers (those halves don't match each other though).
A central for all Windows applications that can be emulated is at Wine AppDB:
http://appdb.winehq.org/

Each application is described along with tips for getting it run correctly. With those tips I managed to get Heroes of Might and Magic IV running just perfectly here.
