Windows wont run after trying Linux Ubuntu 8.04
In windows i started the Linux cd and choose the option to run Linux from the cd. I restarted the computer and it didn't run Linux. I started the cd again and it prompted me to install a program that would make it possible to start from the cd.
I restarted the computer and it ran Linux fine from the cd, i klicked the install option and choosed to install Linux alongside Windows. When i came to the disc partitioning utility i asked if i was shure and that i could not regret the next step. I stopped there and shut down Linux, removed the disc and restarted the computer. It ran for approx. 10 sec before it showed "0 active" and stopped. It can't be started from the HDD but can start linux from the cd. I need to get back on windows - what can i do? Bstrgds Fson |

Re: Windows wont run after trying Linux Ubuntu 8.04
Welcome to TSF!!!
Hi, I would start with this and see what happens this is supposing that you have your Xp recovery disk: Boot with the XP disk until reaching the press R for recovery console, and log onto the Windows installation detected. If you see the prompt for password and haven't assigned one simply press enter. Once at the command prompt there simply type "Fixmbr" and "Fixboot" to see the mbr corrected as well as the boot information rewritten for XP. You should be able to replug the second drive in leaving the XP drive set as the default boot device to see Windows load right up. If you don't have an xp recovery disk we can come up with another idea. Cheers!

Re: Windows wont run after trying Linux Ubuntu 8.04
Try wmorri's advice first .. and if it doesn't help then try this ..
he pipped me to the post with his advice ... Use your Windows installation CD to repair your Windows installation .. boot from CD at the first screen asking if you want to reapir or install .. choose install hit F8 to agree to the user agreement when it next stops it should list your previous Windows installation and ask you whether you want to install or repair. make sure the installation is highlighted then hit R for repair this will only re-install your hardware and leave everything that was installed previously intact .. if you only get the install with no repair option .. hit F3 several times to quit .. then report back here, we will talk about a program called testdisk to repair partitions make sure you have your Key for the windows install since it will ask for it.

Re: Windows wont run after trying Linux Ubuntu 8.04
Wubi, is a program that runs in windows. It allows you to install Ubuntu from your windows desktop. The program takes care of all the partitioning, and mbr setting up. It also allows you to go to your add/remove programs and then just delete ubuntu, and it is gone from your computer, partition and all.
I personally think that this is a bad way to install Linux. You don't get the understanding of how a partition works or how your Linux system is set up. Also, there have been a lot of problems with it. Cheers!
