if you click on the taskbar button, and look in "SYSTEM>PACKAGES>INSTALL PACKAGES" you should be able to use the package manager to do this.
a hint though: make sure and click the little box that says "maximum information" so you can see what disk a package is on. you will notice you have three mandrake cd's (unless you bought them from mandrake online) and that alot of the packages are on the 4th cd. if this doesn't help, scream some angry words at me and i will see about being more descriptive for you. (just kidding, you don't have to scream angry words at me)

yes, that is where you install any mandrake package.
however, sometimes you may want to install something from a binary, and that's an entirely different process, one which i do not at all understand. and, sometimes, you will want to install other types of files, such as yahoo messenger. with the yahoo messenger you download it, and run it, it runs the package manager, and then you have to find it in some obscure folder and run the actual installer. as far as drivers, mandrake should automatically detect hardware changes and ask you if you want to run the config tool, there isn't exactly a "driver" to install. (at least, they are nothing like in windows) i am running mandrake 10, so that is the only reason i have any idea what you are running into. and for what it's worth, i'm a one year linux newb myself, and for the first 6 months, i was still 100% lost in the fog. so, this is about the most complicated question i can answer about linux. :)

you should be able to open it with the package manager, unless it's a tar, and then i have no clue.

Hi, and welcome to the Linux world, and TSF. I believe by using Mandrake you can download the Firefox RPM to your home folder, then in the home folder, rt. click the file, click "extract here", then rt. click the extracted file, and select "install". Perhaps I should try this myself to make sure I'm correct in this, but I use Mozilla from the install CD's packages and I'm happy with it. If I'm not mistaken I installed Yahoo Messenger this way. And it worked impressively well at the time.
Oh yeah, it will ask for the directory to install to, I'll have to update this when I remember where it goes. Think it was something like usr/kde?? Try file://home/"the name of your home dir"/firefox
