install help

Hi i have a hp pavilion a705w it has an Intel Celeron D Processor 2.93ghz 40 gig hdd with 768 megs of ram. i downloaded Ubuntu 8.04 and that works great on it but when ubuntu 8.10 came out i downloaded that and tried to install it on my pc but i could not boot from the cd i was able to install it but i could not boot from the cd when i installed it it asked me to restart my computer and when i do i get this message

grub loading stage 1.5read error

plz help me i don't know what this means and this is really getting on my nerves or i herd something about an "alternative install cd" where u upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 8.1 without reinstalling everything so i looked for it thinking it might work but i couldn't find the iso file to download if this would work could someone give me a link to the download plz thanks in advance.
Nate

Re: install help

iglow -
The alternate install CD link is usually on the same page that you find the regular Ubuntu .iso. It'll be identified as alt-install or similar.

I'm confused by your message. You say you were able to install 8.10 but not boot from the CD. How did you install it if you weren't able to start it?

I'll assume that you actually were able to get to the "Install Ubuntu" part, but it didn't install correctly. If that's the case, the most obvious guess is that either your download was flawed or your burn went sideways.

Usually it's the CD burn, not the download. Try burning the download again at 4X to 8X speed, with a good-quality name-brand CD-R. Not CD-RW, and not some piece of crap Wal-Mart generic CD. If you can get to the first step on the resulting CD, ask it to check the CD for errors.

Oh, yeah, GRUB loading stage errors refer to the bootloader. GRUB is actually a separate program, not part and parcel of Ubuntu, that allows you to start a Linux OS. If you google "GRUB errors" there are lists that explain each GRUB error message.

EDIT: According to the GRUB manual
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/man...1_002e5-errors
Stage 1.5 errors are identified the same as Stage 2 errors. So a Stage 1.5 read error would appear to indicate that Stage 1.5 was unable to find some data that it was expecting to find, so GRUB quits and kicks out the error message.

Again, I'd recommend starting over with a fresh burn of the Ubuntu download. Did you let your burner go at full speed? If so, that's the most likely place to start. Think of the millions of bits of data that all have to be perfect for the CD to work. Try again with high quality CD, burn it slowly, check the CD at that first page, then reinstall over the previous install.

Re: install help

thanks i will try that
your assumptions (if thats the right word to use) were right about my problem mmm i used the cd burner that came in my ibm laptop and burnt it on memorex cds and i downloaded and tryed it 3 or 4 times so i bet it was the speed that did it so i will change that and post what happens thank u

Re: install help

If you already have Ubuntu 8.04 installed, why not just upgrade to 8.10 using the Update Manager?
