Re: sound and webcam

Welcome to TSF!!!

Hi,

Can you supply us with some or all of the manuals if they are from the net. That will give us an idea of what you have tried and what hasn't work yet. Then we can come up with some ideas to help you. I am guessing that you have an Acer by the sounds of you OS and the build-in camera and mic? If I am wrong please inform me.

Cheers!

Re: sound and webcam

I have only used the manual that comes with the acer laptop.
and yes i have an Acer and this laptop does have a build-in mic and camera
the manual basically says to check the audio and unmute capture. i did as i was told but unluckly didnt work. As for the webcam, linux has its own version of AIM that is already installed on the Acer. Using this system the manual says to press the webcam button and press on what i would like to do
e.g show my webcam, voice call, show buddys webcam
but it doesnt let me press these options. Another way to view your options are by pressing action on the chat window clicking video and it gives you the same options yet i still cannot press them.
i don't if i have to install the mic and webcam i have tried but there aren't many wesites or choises on my laptop.

i really appreciate your help

Hi,

I forgot to mention this in my last post. Can you tell me what model of Acer you have. This will help me too.

Cheers!

Re: sound and webcam

Which IM client does Linpus come with and have you checked it's settings/preferences?

Re: sound and webcam

The IM client Linpus comes with is Messenger and yes i have checked the settings but it only presents General and Display Information. It fails to discuss things such as webcam.

Re: sound and webcam

You'll need to use a terminal for the following. To open a terminal click My Documents under the File section. When the File Manager opens, click File and then Terminal and you should be greeted with a fancy box and a prompt. Nice.

A few things you should do with the terminal. At the prompt if you would type in the following commands (one at a time) and then paste the output of both here; that would be great.
Code:
lsusb
 and
lsmod
both start with a lowercase L
You don't have to separate the two, just copy the whole thing in one shot and paste it here. When you paste it (as it will end up being quite long), just paste it between the [ code ] and [ /code ] tags (minus the spaces).

Also try testing the mic out by making a little recording. With the terminal still open try the following:
Code:
arecord testrecording
start talking and when you're done, press CTRL+C to stop recording.
 To playback, type:
aplay testrecording

Re: sound and webcam

No worries. At least the mic worked, though. Sorry about not getting back sooner.

First, if you haven't done so; run a live-update on your system. I wouldn't expect it to work like a charm because of that, but it would be advised.

Next, there's an option in Messenger that can be enabled or disabled which will (if enabled) make webcam options unavailable. The problem is that it seems geared toward MSN and not AIM; however, it resolves the same thing. So, if you would open Messenger and look for 'Account Options' and under Account Options should be the 'Use a Windows Messenger compatible service' option which must be disabled (unchecked).

I don't use an Aspire nor Linpus Lite so I'm not 100% familiar with the layout. Hopefully the above does the trick, but if not, post back.

Re: sound and webcam

Hi,

You know that you could just switch linux distros. There is a version of Ubuntu for the Acer. I believe that you have the eee. Correct me if I am wrong. You might want to look into that.

Cheers!
