Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

By the way, done_fishin and bartender were both correct as ext2 or ext3 would have been fine. Same file system, actually, just ext3 enables journaling. If you get into manually installing linux and creating your own partitions; you'll want a mix of ext2 and ext3.

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

Ok i currently have XP and Vista now installed - moving to Unbuntu.
I have a partition for linux and one for the swap. I burned the 8.10 edition, and started installing it and got this error at the end?

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

I too had problems with 8.10 although not that one you are showing .. I went with 8.04 since it seems to work better. I checked my burn too using the CD verification option.

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

I don't know if it's possible to place the download on a flash drive to boot .. I haven't thought of that or tried .. I have only heard of creating a USB boot once Ubuntu is installed, but I may well be wrong ..

Perhaps someone else, better informed, could to reply about that .. if not I will check it out later when I have a bit more time
take note though that booting from a flash to try to install will be extremely slow, much slower than using a CD

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

Ok I got 8.10 installed and all set. Few questions. On the load in screen for the Unbuntu options

I think there was Unbuntu / Unbuntu kernell something, then recovery

Also if there an easy way to get into windows from Unbuntu or a website that has instructions on a lot of the stuff you can do within it. There is a lot and I don't even know where to start.

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

Hi,

Do you mean like mount the windows drive in ubuntu, so that you can see your information?

If you need a website that can help you with ubuntu problems just go to help.ubuntu.com/community. Then you can do searching for whatever you are having problems with. Another good website is lifehacker.com, and last but not least is google.com.

Cheers!

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

Hi,

Here is what I recommend, fiddle around with stuff for a while. Just try some stuff out. Another thing is what do you want to do? I am sure that there is a program for just about anything that you can think of.

Cheers!

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

When I load my computer up I get these options

Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.10, memtest86+

then Windows Vista/Longhorn (loader)

Well when I first used Ubuntu I had the orange version from the previous pictures, but now I got a light blue one and in the right corner it says Gnome. Whats up?

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

behind the Linux system there are two types of package and manager

one is Gnome the other is Debian

some update has changed the way you see your distro.

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

normally you don't .. you either have one or the other .. have you been experimenting or perhaps left another Live CD ROM in the drive

Gnome is correct for Ubuntu .. so something else must be happening

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

Hang on before you go erasing anything. Could you explain (to me, anyway) what the problem is exactly? Your screen has changed?

Also, Gnome and Debian are not the same thing - at all. Gnome is a desktop environment; which is default for Ubuntu and probably what you've been using this whole time. Debian is a linux distro and shouldn't be an issue.

Which kernel are you choosing to boot?

Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.10, memtest86+

Re: Using Vista and XP with Unbutu

I tried all. They all brought me to the same desktop eventually except the memtest which is obvious. I was trying to get back to the view of what I saw in post 42's picture. That was much easier to use. What I see now I can't figure out what to do. Its probably I am not sure what to do though. Though I do wonder why it changed too.
