Ready to test your knowledge?

Hey skie are you ready to start helping me with my linux? If things work out like they should I'll have a new box ready to use linux (might be knoppix) by this afternoon, thanks entirely to the generosity of the Batty Professor.

Most definately. I think I have a Knoppix CD laying around here somewhere. If not, I'll try to download it over the weekend.

My preference is SUSE, but they're all basically the same underneath. The only real difference between them all is the installer and the few utilities that each add on to make things easier for everyone.

Well I got the knoppix cd burnt, but I didn't have time to try and boot from it yet. Also I have to repair my keyboard which apparently didn't fair the trip from Nashville very well. I got it to post, but didn't have my cd-rom installed yet. When I get home this afternoon I'm going to nap, then see if I can boot up into knoppix.

So, expect the questions to start flowing about 6:00-7:00p.m.

Sounds good. I'll be in and out during the weekend (including today), so don't think I'm ignoring you if I don't reply right away.

Alright, this time I'm for real. Batty Professor stoped by this morning (5:00 or so) and dropped off a couple monitors and keyboards (an "AT/XT" keyboard, which is the reason I haven't gotten it up yet). Anyway, hopefully tonight it will all come together, and there will be a flurry of questions like a monsoon, or swarm of hungry locusts eager to eat everything in site.

Woot! Try installing Gentoo Linux. That'll keep you busy for a few days at minimum. And see if you can do it without going crazy!

First question, how do you get the knoppix cd to boot?

Is there supposed to be something other than the knoppix.bin file on the cd?

on the cd right now I have KNOPPIX_V3.6-2004-08-16-DE.iso...and I just realized that I needed the english version, but it should work anyway right?

Oops!, that old MB I gave you may not boot from CD. You may need to start up using a win98 startup floppy. or you may need to make a boot disk from the dosutils on the Knoppix CD. Something like boot cd.img you'll need to use the rawrite utility to make the img on floppy.

And there may be a bios flash for the MB to aid in getting it to boot from CD. I never checked on it.

Heh well I tried booting from knoppix on my newer computer also and it didn't work, and I got your old MB to boot up and start installing windows...sadly it doesn't have 64mb of memory so it won't finish installing

I knew I should have given you a CD while I was there. I have an extra with me that I know will boot. I've tried it myself. have to see about mailing one tomorrow. But that still doesn't solve the ram problem. Knoppix requires 64 megs for text install, 128 for graphical. Hmmmmm. I do have the Mandrake 10.0 disk set here too. It will do graphical under 64 megs. Have to see if I have wherewithal to burn copies here. I don't however have an extra 32 meg DIMM.

Oh yeah, sorry to keep horning in. I know you directed this at Skie. I also know what I left with you, and am just trying to make things easier.

I found some more ram (I think it is about 40MB). Don't worry about butting in, I thought you were gonna be away for a while so I directed my questions to skie. I'd be happy for an answer from anyone.

Here's what you did wrong. You burned the file to CD instead of using your burning program to "Burn the Image". An ISO file is an exact copy of a CD. Most burning programs have a special menu option specifically for burning images (.iso files). Give this another shot and see if this makes a difference for you. :)

One other thing. Your amount of RAM is going to be an issue. You may not be able to run KDE or Gnome, but you might be able to run one of the smaller Desktop Enviroments such as Fluxbox, Openbox, XFce, Window Maker, etc. These are smaller and use less resources. They're also good for much older computers or those with limited resources. However, they're not as flashy as Gnome/KDE. But they are faster. As an example, XFce loads within 2 seconds and is ready to use.

I think it's something in the air. I've had to answer this question earlier today.

ThatS what I call a hardcore brain fart, because I totally knew that, yet for some reason I never even considered burning it that way. do I need the .md5 and .asc, or what are they used for?

The only reason you need them is to verify that the ISO has not been tampered with or corrupted. They're just to verify the authenticity of the files that you download.
