Where do I go from Knoppix???
My Windowz XP has failed me AGAIN, I can't get online with it. I had downloaded the Knoppix iso file a while ago and never got around to trying it. Since my CD burner was still running, I burned a CD. I booted to the CD and was shocked when it came up and WORKED PERFECTLY. I am using Monzilla Foxfire and it runs WAY faster under Linux than MS Internet Explorer ever did under XP!
I have tried Red Hat, Mandrake and a couple of other distributions I picked up at CompUSA and haven't been able to get any of them to work right. (hardware issues) I love this Knoppix CD, where do I go from here?? I have Word Perfect and several other programs that came with the other Linux packages, can I use any of them with Knoppix? If it wasn't for Photoshop, Windowz XP would go in the dumpster - I have wasted more time on that cluge than it is worthy of. I have had Windows since 1.0 (that was a waste of money) and I am still waiting for Microsoft to get it right!!!! Mark

there is an "installer" for use installing knoppix to the hard disk, but i've never managed to make it work.
it does work however, i just can't figure out how to use it. although, linux's are all the same mainly. so, what one can do, they pretty much all can do. however, knoppix is definately able to do alot, but most of the other distro's should work just as good. knoppix is debian based, in case you would like to try installing the latest version of debian, it should end up working out. i would like to ask what version of mandrake you tried, and what hardware you could have that mandrake won't read. (there is some peices of hardware that need alot of fiddling to work in linux) other than that, we should wait for skie, or one of our other "linux-friendly" people to comment on this. possibly one of them can work you through installing knoppix.

Hi, and welcome to the Linux world. I'm sorry I can't be of much help installing the Knoppix. I have Knoppix down-n-burnt, but haven't tried it. I don't know which release of Mandrake you tried, or what hardware you have, but chances are the hardware you have is supported, you just may not have gotten the packages for it. Or not gotten it correctly configured. I would be glad to help with a Mandrake installation, since it's what I'm most familiar with. If you really want to do the Knoppx install, I'll need to do some research, but I'm afraid you're going to run into things you want to do that won't work for lack of package completeness, that would be avoided altogether by installing any full distribution.
Other considerations: Do you wish to kick windoze off completely? or are there files in your system that you wish to save? If in the install process you select (goes something like "let Linux create my partitions" and "use entire disk" ) you will lose everything currently there. You should also see an option for "use free space" this will cram Linux into a much smaller area perhaps, but leaves your existing file system intact. You can also use LILO to make it dual boot, but I don't sense you're having that in mind. I sense you might install in the small partition initially, use the CD burner to save anything precious, then wipe the thing and start over. Having a fresh Linux install and full capacity of the hard drive, the thing should scream. Let us know which distro's you have tried, maybe they're just old or more likely they were just not complete. Especially if they were free, and just one disk. If they were only one disk you just didn't get anything more than a teaser, and had minimal package support. That would explain why your hardware didn't run.

Post your hardware specs and I'm sure we can get you going =) Chances are there is something new in the kernel that is being used by Knoppix that has allowed your hardware to work that wasn't previously included by Redhat or Mandrake. All hardware is a function of the kernel not the individual distro, some distro's may require a little more fiddling to get things working though. And btw you can run Photoshop under linux using Crossover Office. Its 40 dollars but thats still half the price of a windows xp license and certainly worth the money if you have some apps you can't live without that are windows based =)

If you want to download the latest ISO of a particular distro (free ones at least), you can go to http://www.linuxiso.org. They have Knoppix on there. If you want to try some of the others, take a look at the lastest versions of the following: SUSE, Mandrake and Fedora (stay away from RedHat as it's no longer supported). Or for distro's geared for more advanced users: Debian, Slackware and Gentoo.

The command for installing the latest versions of knoppix to HD is "knx2hd", though I really recommend against installing it to the hard drive since it seems sort of buggy when off the CD. I'm sure with some tweaking you could get it to a usable point, but without the ability actually log in as root (I know you can get a root shell, but that doesn't help for some things).
I do recommend RedHat 9 if you need a permanent install. If you're new to the linux thing- most people experimenting with Knoppix are- it'll be very easy to set up and use. I've had some problems with it, but that was only because of a faulty hard drive. I could only imagine how smoothly it would work on a clean machine. |

one, is there anyspecific way to make the linux partition that the knoppix site says i need to have on the hard disk? the site says i need an ext3 (?) partition, but doesn's explain how i make one. two, why can't you log in as root? and, can someone tell me what the stupid password on the newest knoppix is? i saw it in the readme, so i used to know, but now i can't find it. i have to say, that if i had tried harder a few months back, i would have figured it out, and i would be one of the ones explaining it here.

If you already have a partition setup and just need to create the filesytem on it (which is what ext3 is) then you can run mke2fs -j /dev/hd(x) is the hd partition such as hda would be primary on the first IDE controller hdb = secondary on the first IDE controller...
Not sure about the root pass. If you can get a root shell then you can just change it though.. ;) with the `passwd` command

Your best bet...
I love my knoppix cd, but only use if for file recoveries. I was able to install it on my HD but found it very limiting Knoppix is not design to be use as a full mulit-user system.
I do have a RedHat 9 server up and running. I almost never use the K-destop because it is so slow (my linux box is only 350 mhz). As soon as I can upgrade my machine to a faster processor I might relly start using the GUI, but for now it works really grat as a web server, ftp server and a file serve. I would sugget any of these sites http://www.cheapiso.com/ or http://distrowatch.com/ this one will get you really cheap version of linux. http://www.linuxcentral.com/_v3/ I would recomend either mandrake or feroda. You can download the iso and burn the cds. I was able to install redhad 9 that way. I also strongly recomend Downlaoding and installing webmin. Webmin This is the best and easiest way to configure many of the aspect of linux thru a web bases interface. Hope this helps. I am definately not an expert, but have been playing with my red hat box for a round a year. likesun Last edited by likesun; 01-04-2005 at 01:12 PM. |
