I tried installing ubuntu from the disk onto a usb 60gb seagate harddrive, well, i did that but it wont boot into ubuntu from that drive, and windows won't recognize it either, is there a way i can format that drive so that windows recognizes it again using the ubuntu disc? Please i'm desperate, i've tried erasing those ubuntu files off the harddrive while in ubuntu using the disc, but it gives me an error, or just doesn't let me erase. Is there a way for FORMAT a harddrive while IN ubuntu?

Re: Need Help With Ubuntu! Harddrive Dead!
Hi,
So you want to format the entire drive, and you want to do it from inside an OS. Well, the answer is that it can't happen. With linux there are at least two and most likely three partitions that are needed to run the OS. It isn't like Windows that only needs one partition to store all its info. That being said have a look at the info below: Please follow these instructions line for line. This will allow you to partition your hdd. You will need two things, an ISO file from Gparted, and a program that will allow you to burn a LiveCD. I would recommend CDburnerXP, or Finalburner. Unless you have a cd burner that will burn ISO files. A regular cd burning program won't work. It must have an ISO burning function.
Let me know when you have that done and I will help you with the next step. Cheers!

Re: Need Help With Ubuntu! Harddrive Dead!
I tried gparted and for some reason it didn't notice the harddrive, and i was running ubuntu off the disc, not the drive. anyway, i tried some different methods out and i used the vista installation disc to format, and it gave me a 0x80004005 error, so i tried the windows xp installation disc and it said it couldn't format it, but it could delete the partition and then format, so i did that, formatted for like 30min(5400rpm drive) and now xp on my machine recognizes it! :D just to be safe i formatted it through xp and it's clean and useful now. Thanks anyway wmorri!
