Undo desktop effects - Kubuntu 8.10
In haste I accepted the desktop effects change after my upgrade to Kubuntu 8.10 without checking first they work. Now I do not have a working display. How can I undo these changes from the console login.
Any ideas ? Thanks in advance! PF |

Welcome to TSF!!
Hi, I am guessing that you are talking about Compiz-fusion. I would recommend that you do a Code:
apt-get update Cheers!

Re: Undo desktop effects - Kubuntu 8.10
Thanks wmorri for your reply. You think if I do "apt-get update" it will reinstall my default settings I messed up? I do not think any of the packages are missing or broken, only the settings are incorrect for my video card and I am not able to restore them from the console login.
I just want to get back to default video environment. Cheers, PF |

Re: Undo desktop effects - Kubuntu 8.10
Hi,
Here is what i would recommend. First that you go into Synaptic and do a search for Compiz and then remove the check marks from anything that is installed. If that doesn't work which it should you can also use this: Code:
sudo apt-get remove NAME THE PROGRAM HERE

Re: Undo desktop effects - Kubuntu 8.10
Hi wmorri,
I have no access to synaptic with booting with the default kernel version in KDE. Interestingly enough, I had access when I tried with a previous kernel version in grub. I disabled desktop effects and uninstalled and reinstalled compiz to no avail; the default kernel still has the same problem. I somehow assume that the driver I was using for the Nvidia MX 440 is messed up but I do not see how this is connected with the difference between the two kernel versions? I an login in console mode (command line but I am not sure what to change...) thanks again, PF Any idea how to fix the |

Re: Undo desktop effects - Kubuntu 8.10
Hi,
What is the latest kernel that you are using? What is the difference between the two? This sounds like a good bug report for the linux kernel community. Cheers!
