OS: XP--trying to install Ubuntu

Can't install Ubuntu starter pack

I keep setting the boot priority to CD-ROM, where the Linux DVD is, but whenever I restart the computer, the Windows XP opens instead. How can I get it to boot Ubuntu?

Is the CD a live ISO image and have you partitioned your HD in preparation for Linux Installation?

Re: Can't install Ubuntu starter pack

It's an LXFSDVD13 (whatever that is). I can't partition the C drive. It says that there is no available space, even though there is 18.8 GB available.

Is it p[ossible to run Windows and Linux from the same partition?

Re: Can't install Ubuntu starter pack

Hi,

It is great to hear that you are willing to try linux. A lot of folks don't want to try messing with thier computer and just like what they have.

My first question is how big is the hdd that you are thinking about using to put linux on. If you have at least 5GB of free space you should be free, but the more that you have free the better you will be. We can work with any amount of space but the more the better.

As for your question about running windows and linux on the same partition, the answer is no. It has to do with they type of file systems that windows and linux run on NTFS for windows. [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext2]Ext2 is one of the file systems for linux. But I don't want to confuse you too much.

Cheers!

Never heard of that. The easiest way to tell whether you copied the download (wrong) or made a bootable CD out of the download (correct) is to fire up Windows and Explore the CD. If you see one huge file you did it wrong. If you see several folders and a handful of files you at least converted the download to a CD. Whether the CD is any good or not is another story.
