Possible alternative OS on Asus Eee pc?

Hey

I bought this laptop for school

http://eeepc.asus.com/global/product900.html?n=0

and I love it. I have the Linux version. While in the computer store, the clerk mentioned something about a different Linux OS that I could potentially put on it. I think it was Ubuntu? but not sure. Can anyone give me any info on a good alternative OS that would be compatible?

Cool!

I looked at this website.

http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/

But I can't find many good reviews on this OS. Can anyone say anything good or bad about it?

Re: Possible alternative OS on Asus Eee pc?

I don't have an eee converted to any of the Ubuntu variants (I know there's an Ubuntu Netbook Remix and the eeebuntu version, didn't know about this one) so can't say about that exactly.
But Ubuntu is certainly a fine choice for the average desktop or laptop, and I think you'd be happier with it than the OEM version.

Unless you have an external optical drive or can borrow one, there's some extra complexity involved because you have to set up a USB thumb drive to deliver the package.

If having a thumb drive or other portable form of storage is needed, that really won't be a problem. But other than that, would you stay that installing this OS is very difficult? Before getting this laptop I had no experience with Linux at all and likewise, this will be my first time switch to a different OS on a machine. I'm up for a challenge, but is it very difficult for a novice to do correctly?

Well, it looks like about a 2 or 2.5 on a scale of 10 to me. I think once you get your thumb drive configured to install the OS the rest should be pretty straightforward.

You should google eeebuntu and sign up on their forum. Hang out with the folks who have been doing this.
