Acer One question
I have a question about these Acer Ones for all of you dedicated Linux enthusiasts...
Does anyone know what wireless card is inside the Linux One and the XP One? The XP version almost seems like a better deal than the Linpus version. You get a bigger HDD for one, and it wouldn't hurt to have XP. I'm thinking partition the drive, install Ubuntu. But I need to know if the wireless card would be supported out of the box. like with our Centrino laptop. Don't want to screw around with madwifi or ndiswrapper. |

Re: Acer One question
Hi,
I believe that the wireless card is an Atheros card. However, I wouldn't recommend that you get this laptop at the moment especially if you are going to run window on it. There seems to be a problem with the wireless droping out ramdomly. But, if you are going to be putting Ubuntu or another linux on it then you should be set. Go here for help with Ubuntu. Cheers!

Re: Acer One question
Hi, w!
I found that same AcerOne guide after I started this thread. Shoulda done my own homework! That Ubuntu guide looks like a lot of work but at least someone (probably several people) took the time to lay it all out. I imagine the Atheros chip is in both the Windows and Linux versions. I wonder if you could open up an Acer One and drop in an Intel 4965 card? MaximumPC reviewed three netbooks and rated the Acer the highest. NewEgg had an "Open Box" One on sale yesterday afternoon for $250. It was one of the more expensive models. I almost reached for the credit card! |

Re: Acer One question
Bartender, Do your homework! LOL
I couldn't tell you if you can just change the wireless card. I haven't got any experience with that. The "Open Box" sounds like a great idea, but I have other things that I need to save for atm. I might be able to find something about that online. I will do a search and see what I come up with. EDIT: It seems to be that there is a lot of talk around the web about it. I found a couple of things that you might be interested in: Intell switch, and Make Atheros work Cheers!
