My computer will not install Linux ISO files from disc CD or DVD.
Have being trying to install PCLinux, Ubuntu, Mint, with the live CD. at boot it shows all the options for instalation but none of them work just get a blank screen. Its not the disc at fault as it works on other computers. (and they have all been re-burnt at 4x)

Any oppinions on what the problem is ?

Hi,

The first question that I have is what program are you using to create the LiveCD with. It must be a burner that can burn ISO files. If it can't then you are just wasting your cd/dvd's.

What happens after you choose to boot from the cd or dvd drive? Do you get a blank screen followed by something that say "vmlinux" or something similar?

Answer those two questions and it will help me a lot.

Cheers!

I have used both Nero and CDBurnerXP and as I said they both work on other computers, have tried them on my son's PC and they work.

They boot to the splash screen showing its a live CD and giving options memory test, and safe mode and such. When I hit the key for it to run the liveCD

Re: Problems Installing LiveCD,s

I run almost the same setup as you and have come up with a similiar prob with Puppy 4.1 it won't load( although it does on one of my other comps) yet Puppy 3.0 does. Yet the same machine will load Suse, Mint. Maybe try an older version?

Re: Problems Installing LiveCD,s

I have heard some great things about Mint, but it seems that you have already tried that so, scratch that. I don't know if you have thought about it but you might want to try Fedora. This is a really nice distro, but you might need to do a little work with learning it. Think about it though.

Cheers!

Re: Problems Installing LiveCD,s

Thanks
Have downloaded latest version of Mint burnt it at 2x and got that to work.
Still no luck with the other Distro's.
Have been told on the Linuxquestions forum that it is the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT Graphics card that is the problem.

Re: Problems Installing LiveCD,s

Hi,

Nvidia for the most part has played really nicely with Linux so it is interesting that you are having problems with it. What sort of problems if any atm are you having?

Cheers!

Re: Problems Installing LiveCD,s

Try this :
When you see all options for installation, highlight Install option and press F6 ( for ubuntu, don't know about others) to edit command.Remove two words 'quite' and 'splash' at the end of command and then press enter.
let me know what results you get.

Re: Problems Installing LiveCD,s

Nvidia is cooperating with Linux developers but most people have to get the Linux OS to run, then install the nvidia drivers. Problem being, if you can't get a display, you can't get to the repositories!

I don't remember exaclty how to do it, but isn't there a "vga" mode at the install page? Some way to run the LiveCD using very basic vga drivers? I think that's supposed to work well enuf to get Ubuntu loaded, then get online and install Nvidia drivers

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia

Another idea suggested by some posters while googling this - try installing with an alternate install CD instead of the LiveCD. I think it uses basic vga drivers by default, possibly detouring around your problem.
