How Is The Gui Of Linux? (in Words Please)
It depends on what you want it to be, you can use GNOME, KDE, XFCE, BlackBox, you just have to try and see which one you like. GNOME: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME KDE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE XFCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xfce Blackbox: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackbox HOW LINUX MANAGE THE MEMORY? HOW LINUX MANAGE THE PROCESSES? Linux manages everything from the "kernel," which is just a really, really big file which contains all the drivers and software needed to make your applications work. It also has modules, which are bits of kernel code which the system can turn on or off if it needs them. HOW IS THE SECURITY IN LINUX? Most viruses and malware found in Windows is coded to work for Windows. You can get them in windows, but when it looks for the C:\Windows\win32 folder, it won't find it. Anyway, to do anything major to your system, it would need to know your password. IF THERE IS TECHNICAL SUPPPORT FOR LINUX? www.google.com, mainly. Some distributions offer support. SUSE linux has an enterprise desktop that comes with support, but OpenSuse has optional support you can buy. Professional Support subscriptions that I've seen range from $50-$200 a year, but are used mainly by big corporations. For home use, you can google any problem and find a solution. HOW MUCH IT COST? Linux is free. 0 Cost. You CAN buy support, the prices as above, but generally, Linux people are happy to help with any questions. |

Re: How Is The Gui Of Linux? (in Words Please)
You might want to try downloading a (free) LiveCD version of a Linux distro such as Ubuntu and give it a try. You don't need to install Ubuntu (or many other distros) in order to try it out. Most Linux distros are much lighter on system resources than Windows. You won't need as much space on your drive, far less RAM, and Linux can normally get by with a much less powerful system than most versions of Windows need.
Technical support can be found at various Wikis, and Linux forums. Ubuntu, for example, has a great forum and lots of help is available when you need it. Plus, because various distros are becoming so popular, most computer forums such as TSF has lots of folks familiar enough with Linux to answer most of your questions and provide help when you need it. |

I don't know the details of how Linux manages memory, but I can tell you it uses available memory more efficiently.
On our Acer 5920 Vista/Ubuntu dual-boot, Vista hogs almost a gig of RAM at idle. Ubuntu uses about 300 MB RAM at idle. |

Re: How Is The Gui Of Linux? (in Words Please)
As for the support, it is handled quite differently than in windows.
If you have a problem, you go onto a forum, or an IRC channel, and ask the question there, or ask for a solution to your problem. normally, within 2-3 minutes, you have 3 or 4 people helping you, taking you through the process step by step until it is fixed. I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes, and the use of the forums, is free, same with irc. |

A flavor of linux you might try is linux mint. Everything works right out of the box; mplayer, etc. One of the big complaints of other distros is it doesn't supply resticted drivers on the cd. They are all in linux mint and it is based on ubuntu. 5.0 is similar to vista but you might need a better graphic card to render the effects.;3d and other goodies. It comes with office and photo software like gimp or digikam.

Re: How Is The Gui Of Linux? (in Words Please)
I think this guy is trolling.
He should just down load the Linux Kernel and read the code to see how memory is managed, processes are spawned and killed, look at the iptables stack for Ethernet security and the file system code for files, process, and kernel-user space security. This forum give free advice. Most distributions are "fairly" bullet proof and will just install themselves if the hardware is generic enough. |
