linux supported mp3 player?
Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a linux-supported portable mp3 player?
I had been using a Sony NWD B103F on my Windows machine, and a few months ago I made the switch to linux (pclos 2007). The mp3 player worked fine in it... the only apparent difference being that when plugged in there were more files visible. In Winsows only the downloaded mp3 files were visible, but in Linux system files also appeared. I may have inadvertenly deleted one of these, resulting in a malfunction of the player. (Trash also emptied... so no undo possible.) The player - when removed from the computer - just kept clycling between powering-up and shutting down. I tried the reset, but no joy. The cycling continued until the battery ran down; and that's how it remains. I went to Sony's website hoping to be able to download a fix; but again no luck. The website clearly states that the machine only supports Windows. So I am looking for a new player, and would like to know of a model that supports Linux. Or, failing that, one that will definitely work in Linux, even though I would have to be careful not to delete critical files. I would hate to have to revert to Windows just for this. |

Re: linux supported mp3 player?
Just connect up the USB and see if "something" gets mounted. Most mp3 players use DOS as a file system (except native IPODs). Then go snooping through the mounted directories and find out where the mp3's are store. Then just drag and drop the songs.
There are now several GPL mp3 control programs out there. You might look at one of these as a replacement for the Sony control program. These sites are a good resource because they often tell you how to reset an appliance when you screw up. I smoked an IPOD about 3 months ago because my USB wires were hooked up wrong inside my computer. My IPOD wouldn't boot or anything. Finally trashed it. When I said "smoked", I had real smoke coming from it. It good really hot and never worked after that. |
