A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

Alright, well, I decided to dual-boot Windows XP and Linux.

Now, I pretty much know nothing about Linux. Pretty much the basics I guess you could say.

Anyways, I have a Dell Inspiron E1505.

I installed Ubuntu 8.04

I found this HOWTO which seemed to be exactly what I'm looking for. .
http://ge.ubuntuforums.com/showpost....97&postcount=1

Everything goes fine until Step 3, right after the reboot.

It says to go to the directory where I extracted ndiswrapper. I found that it extracted it to a folder named ndiswrapper-1.51 in my Home folder.

So, I just guessed I could type in
Code:
cd /home
and then the
Code:
sudo make uninstall
.

But, when I do that, I get this error message. . and I have no idea what to do from there. .

Code:
make: *** No rule to make target `uninstall'. Stop.

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

Ok, so ndiswrapper is in the /home directory, but did you cd to that file. So it would look like this:
Code:
XXXX@linux: cd /home
XXXX@linux:/home:ls
file1 file2 file3 ndiswrapper file4
XXXX@linux:/home: cd ndiswrapper
Try that and see what happens.
Cheers!

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

Alright, well. . . I guess the Home Folder ( Getting there by going Places > Home Folder ) is not the same as typing in
Code:
cd /home
When I did what you told me, I got this:
Code:
jason@jason-laptop:~$ cd /home
jason@jason-laptop:/home$ ls
jason
jason@jason-laptop:/home$
So what is the correct directory for the Home Folder? What should I type in?

Actually going to Places > Home Folder is the same as cd /home. One is just in the gui, and the other is in command. Did you get a different result when you went from the gui?

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

What do you mean from the gui? I'm a little lost.

I can say though that all the ndiswrapper files are in the Home Folder.

But when I did cd /home and then ls, it only displayed jason. (As shown above)

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

Try this from command at the XXX@XXX:~$ type ls, then see what folders come up. If you find one labeled "ndiswrapper" see if you can type cd ndiswrapper, and then access the folder. If you can then that is great. see if you can get that far.

Cheers!

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

That worked perfectly.

Alright, now I am on step 4. .

I did this code
Code:
unzip -a R151517.EXE
Then it tells me to change directories to the DRIVER directory that was just extracted.

Well, where is that?

That's where I get lost.. . . Again.

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

I would type in command and see if you have something similar:
Code:
XXX@linux:~$ ls
file1 file2 file3 Desktop
XXX@linux:~$ cd Desktop
XXX@linux:/Desktop$ ls
R151517.EXE file2 file3 file4
XXX@linux:/Deskop$ cd R151517.EXE
XXX@linux:/R151517$
Cheers!

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

Alright, that helped me get the rest of the way through the steps.

Sadly though, it still doesn't work. And it seems that that thread is abandoned, so I can't really get help.

Do you know any other way to get wireless working on linux?

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

So explain what happens when you go to try to get online. Do you even get a page or what happens. Also, did you have the wifi light on your laptop come on? Did you try typing "sudo iwlist scanning" into terminal, and what where the results?

Start with that and see what happens.
Cheers!

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

The wifi light doesn't even come on. The only way I am able to go online with linux is with actually running a ethernet cable to my laptop. The wifi light does come on in Windows, so it's not the actual wireless card.

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

Well, here's a story and a half. . .

So I decided to just start fresh. I uninstalled Linux, and then reinstalled it.

As soon as I started up, I got a pop up saying that new drivers are available, so I downloaded and installed them.

Then, my wireless worked!

So that's kinda weird, but I'm not arguing.

Oh, one more question. . I have a built in touchpad (obviously) but I use a USB wireless mouse. In Windows, I was able to disable the touchpad so I didn't actually touch the buttons or anything while typing. Is there any way to do that in Linux?

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

Great to hear that the reinstall worked for you. Not quite sure why it didn't work before.

When you first started using the wireless mouse did you have to install and drivers for it to work, or was it just plug and play. Also, what is the brand and model of the mouse?

Cheers!

Re: A little help with wireless - 1390 WLAN mini-card

I actually used it with Windows, and never unplugged it when I switched to Linux, and it just worked.

It's a Gigaware. Although, I don't see any kind of model number on it.
