How can I install XP into my new Linux laptop?
I accidentally bought a ThinkPad T61 with Linux OS. Although I'd like to learn Linux, I need to have Windows to do my work asap. I need to either 1) Install Windows side by side with Linux, or 2) wipe out Linux and install Windows.
When I put the Windows XP disk in, installation started the way it should be, then an edit says no harddisk is found. Installation is terminated there. What can I do to install my Windows XP into this new Linux machine? Thanks for your help. |

Re: How can I install XP into my new Linux laptop?
is this a retail version of xp or one that came with another computer. In addition, by switching os, you could void you warranty and may not be able to use their tech support should you have a problme. If you just purchased the computer, you really need to exchange it.

Re: How can I install XP into my new Linux laptop?
This is an XP that came with my former laptop, which I destroy by knocking a glass of water over the keyboard.
Your warranty point makes sense. I was just thinking how I can get things up and running asap... Quote:

unfortunately you cannot transfer the xp from your old laptop to your new - different drivers and such since is manufacturer specific and its a violation of the eula. You will have to purchase xp.

Re: How can I install XP into my new Linux laptop?
Buying a new copy of XP (or Vista now?) is not a problem since my company will foot the bill, but do you think I will still enounter the same issue of "harddisk not found"?

Re: How can I install XP into my new Linux laptop?
if the harddrive is sata and if you decide to install vista, you may not have the problem, if you install xp, there is a chance you will get the same error
Again the error you were getting could have been the disk you were using since it had drivers for a different laptop.

Re: How can I install XP into my new Linux laptop?
first try entering bios and turning off achi mode for hard drive so that windows xp instalation can find hdd... most laptops i have encountered have so little setting in bios that only way i found around this problem is to try integrating sata drivers in xp instalation using nlite...

Re: How can I install XP into my new Linux laptop?
Windows doesn't see a drive because the drive is formatted in a Linux compatible file system, probably ext3. Trust me. I just ran across this the other day. I added a second HDD, set up as a Linux drive, to a Windows PC, restarted it, Windows saw nothing. Formatted the drive to ntfs and the drive was recognized.
You can download/burn a copy of Gparted, boot from the CD you make, wipe the drive, and format it as ntfs. A Windows OS CD will then see that there is a drive. Your legal problems are your own. |
