network linux to xp
Using an ASUS Linux notebook on the road but need to transfer files to and from my home XP desktop via the network router (non-wireless). Don't know how to set up the network to do this. Already have a network set up among the family XP machines and one Vista laptop used by my spouse for her home business - just can't get the Linux machine in the loop. No apparent way to get "under" the GUI to use UNIX commands.
Thanks for any help - need something simple if possible as this old brain doesn't work like it used to. :-( Jim Last edited by jimc76; 08-01-2008 at 09:17 PM. Reason: spelling |

Re: network linux to xp
To get under the GUI, see if your distribution has a "run" like windows xp. My Fedora 9 has a text terminal under :Applications->system tools->terminal. That will bring up a text terminal. If you have a place to type in a command only, then type in "xterm". That will bring up a terminal that you can then use the Unix commands.
You will have to setup your router to forward ports to your inside windows machines so that you can use windows services. "amlife" is right about setting up SAMBA. Samba will export the linux files systems for sharing on the window machines. You will need to set up the Samba server end of it. The samba client, I think, is installed during the Linux install, but the server is more complicated because of how the various folders are exported and the various privileges associated with those folder. |

Re: network linux to xp
Yes, you can run Linux and Windows on the same computer. It is called "dual booting". You just have to partition your hdd so that you have at least three partitions. One for your Windows install. One for your Linux install and one for your swap drive.
There is also another way. That is to run a virtual pc on your computer. This is a program that runs inside you current OS that allows you to install and run another OS. It runs basically off ram, and doesn't touch your hdd. This is a good idea if you don't want to go through the process of partitioning, or you don't know how. Cheers!
