I'm trying to connect a Philips Jackrabbit cdrw drive to an old laptop running Fedora 5. I don't seem to get any response from the system when I connect the drive to the USB port. Being a Linux novice I don't really know what to expect when connecting USB devices (should I get the same type of response as when connecting a USB device on a Windows machine?)
Any helpful comments gratefully received. |

Re: Linux (Fedora 5) - Philips Jackrabbit cdrw driver
From a command prompt window, type in "dmesg" after you have plugged in the cd/dvd. Several dozen screens will zip past, but you will only want the last 10 lines or so. You should see the kernel responses if it can see the drive. Core 5 is a little dated. USB's have come a long way since then.
You should see something like this. This is for a flash drive but yours cd/dvd should be similar. This "dmesg" info is the low level hardware drivers talking to the kernel. Since Core 5, Linux now mounts the drive and assigns a file system, auto-magically. usb-storage: device found at 3 usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning usb 2-1: New USB device found, idVendor=1307, idProduct=0163 usb 2-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 usb 2-1: Product: USB Flash Drive usb 2-1: Manufacturer: USB 2.0 usb 2-1: SerialNumber: 56b5c50621e017 Good luck. |
