Lfs
where would be a good place to download linux software from for use with linux from scratch? i can't find a hyperlink in the book and some of these download sites aren't offering the versions that LFS is asking for, which I'd prefer to use as a first timer. I'm using the Ubuntu 8.04 distribution as a host system.

Re: Lfs
Try "google". Type in the program name, source, linux and go from there. So to find the source. I wouldn't worry about the version unless it was over a year old. For instance, in google, type in "linux make GNU 3.81" will take "eventually" to the source code page. On some of the pages is "CVS Repository". This includes the on line program code. SOMETIMES you can go back and get earlier versions. That is, you can back out fixes to the code.
Use google to find your source code. Enter "GNU", Linux, and the package name. Eventually you will get to a tar file that you can download and run the build. If you want a real challenge, build the GNU C compiler from source code, on a system that doesn't have an installed C compiler. The C compiler will have to bootstrap itself into existence by compiling simpler versions of itself. |

Re: Lfs
google.com/linux is a version of Google tailored to searching for Linux stuff. You can also look around freshmeat.net, which often links to the source code and the project's homepage.
Also keep in mind the LFS LiveCD should have all of the required software for building the system.
