Need help installing... HELP ME PLZ!!!!

Hello All,

I've been using Linux for a while, but the environments I've been using are ones that have been setup with all the tools that I've needed to use installed already. The organization that I work for has asked that I help setup a dedicated machine for them, but I'm running into some problems as I a windows person, and Linux seems somewhat Alien to me when it comes to installing things.

I'm really in need of help with installing modules for PHP. In particular, I need to setup the mysqli extension but the documentation on PHP's website just DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TO ME.

The Directions Read as Follows

Code:
To install the mysqli extension for PHP, use the --with-mysqli=mysql_config_path/mysql_config configuration option where mysql_config_path represents the location of the mysql_config program that comes with MySQL versions greater than 4.1.

If you would like to install the mysql extension along with the mysqli extension you have to use the same client library to avoid any conflicts.

http://us3.php.net/manual/en/mysqli.installation.php
Can anyone Newbify this for me? Do I need to rebuild PHP? If so, How do I do that, since it was preinstalled during the RHEL installation?

BTW are there any good guides anyone can recommend for installing applications? I am aware of yum & rpm, but I do not know exactly what they do. I've also seen mention of the configure command, is there a guide on that somewhere?

I want to learn more, but I'm at a total loss, without a good guide to figure things out by example.

PS. I am Using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 as my OS.

So, you are basically looking for a good guide that will allow you to set up a LAMP server. LAMP stands for Linux Apache Mysql PHP. Take a look at this page. It is from the wonderful website How to Forge. This is the basic set up for a RHEL system.

I hope this gets you on your way.

Cheers!
