Fedora 9 - Signal over range!
Hi;
Has anyone out there installed Fedora 9. I've done so in text mode because I cannot install it any other way, the OS is working but I cannot view the XServer. The problem it seems is that my monitor cannot display the visual output. Once I type "startx" my monitor first displays; "DVI No input signal" then follows that with "Signal over range". The problem is coming from the monitor, so it seems I somehow need to drop the resolution or the refresh rate for the XServer while in Text Mode and I don't know how to do that. Note that I have NOT installed Graphic Card specific drivers. The monitor I use is an LCD Flat Panel Hercules Prophetview 920DVi. The computer itself is very new with current hardware. Many thanks! Re: Fedora 9 - Signal over range!
You have an older monitor. Monitors have a vertical (and horizontal) refresh rate. The rate generally lies between 34K (the old CGA which had worse resolution than the ega and vga). You are selecting a rate that the monitor can't handle. It won't switch to that rate. So you will have to change to a refresh lower rate which means a lower dot count. Old monitors would switch and and eventually the monitor would burn out (in a matter of hours) and it was even possible to get smoke out the vents of the monitor.
The manual that came with your monitor will have the vertical and horizontal specs. The newer graphics cards WILL overdrive monitors. Go to this site "http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=83973" and follow the directions. This will work for most/all distributions. |
