So... what now? (DSL related)

Well, I finally managed to convince my computer to boot Damn Small Linux from the CD. Now I have a bunch of questions.

-The colours are pretty crazy. It looks like a normal background with splotches of colour all over it. And sometimes when I right click the colour will randomly inverse and stuff. The menus are all readable and xTris (a Tetris) game seemed to look fine. Just the background is wonky. Lines aren't clearly defined either. So how do I fix this? I think it's running in the right resolution.

-How do I use a "print screen to clipboard" function similar to what you can do in Windows? That would help immensely with showing people what's going on.

-How do I kick Windows out? I want the computer to be exclusively used for DSL. Right now it's just running from the CD and from the RAM.

Thanks in advance,
Keilan

Re: So... what now? (DSL related)

My first question is are you using a video card, or just the onboard video? I ask this becuase DSL might not like your video card.

As for how to add screenshots, there might be a program that allows you to take shots, then save them. I am not sure as I haven't used DSL.

There is an easy way to get rid of windows if you so choose, you can just delete your windows partition and either combine it with your linux partition or create a new partition. I am sure that DSL has a partitioning program, but I like gparted if there isn't one. However, I would wait on this until you get your screen problems taken care of.

Cheers!

You're asking how to take a screen shot? Would pressing "print screen" not work?

Print screen doesn't work. But I will look for a program.

I did sort of resolve the screen issue. It runs fine when I switch the resolution to 640 x 480. Hehe. I'm using an onboard video card.

May I ask why you chose DSL? Don't get me wrong its a good little live linux, but as a fully featured install, in my opinion, other distros can be better, depending on the functionality you are looking for. to install DSL just delete the windows partition then i think right click on the desktop and there should be an option to install DSL to the HDD

Re: So... what now? (DSL related)

I have to agree with dragonember on this one. DSL is a great little OS. There are a lot of other OS's out there that have fuller libraries. There are more programs that can be downloaded and other services that can be run. But, if you like DSL, then definitely stay with it and you will be rewarded.

Cheers!

I agreen with the above 2 posts, also. I would recommend starting out with a distro like PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, Mint, openSuse etc.
As far as the resolution problem goes, it's probably because you haven't installed/configured a graphics driver, and you can't until it's installed to the hard drive.

Re: So... what now? (DSL related)

I tried to install Xubuntu but it gave me an error saying "Setup requires 256MB of RAM". I choose DSL because my machine is pretty low end.

Pentium III 600MHz
256MB of RAM
Integrated Graphics (which consumes part of my RAM)
15GB HDD

Ok, so then go ahead and install DSL on your computer. That should fix your monitor problem as K-B said.

Cheers!
