Internal NTFS Hard Drive not seen in Ubuntu

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 from 7.10. I had a 80gb NTFS (formated from when i had WinXP) hard drive that was working fine in 7.10, but since I upgraded I'm not seeing it at all in 8.04. Any help would be greatly appreciated on how i can get it to work in 8.04. Here is how my fstab file looks:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# -- This file has been automaticly generated by ntfs-config --
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# Entry for /dev/sda1 :
UUID=b2de42b3-5a8f-402a-a201-7d8b68a8ecaa / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# Entry for /dev/sda5 :
UUID=e0154d46-0a36-4ca6-ae76-f365ac1b9a2a none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto 0 0

Re: Internal NTFS Hard Drive not seen in Ubuntu

I agree. /dev/sda1 is now / for an ext3 file system. But what happened to /dev/sda2 and sda3? sda4 is the extended partition which made /dev/sda5 the swap. Are sda2 and sda3 hiding somewhere? And they are where ntfs is now.

If Ubuntu allows this to happen, this is a really, really, really bad design flaw for Ubuntu. This is an upgrade of an existing system and hard drive. This is a really bad design flaw!!!!!!

Take a look at this page on fstab. It gives some good information, and might help you out with what the problem is.

Cheers!

Re: Internal NTFS Hard Drive not seen in Ubuntu

well dude, did you try to dual boot it? or did you just wipe the drive clean when installing ubuntu? looks like the latter. you need to set up the dual boot environment before you try to install another os. and back everything up also.

its not a design flaw, thats how 99% of *nix distros work.

I'd bet they're labeled that way because /dev/sda1 is a primary partition, but the rest of the mountable ones are not. There can only be three primary partitions and from what I remember, sdx[1-3] (and hdx[1-3] ) are always reserved for those.

For the OP's question: Can you open a terminal and run /sbin/fdisk -l then post the output back here? It's very possible a drive is missing from /etc/fstab. Is the 80 GB drive a separate physical drive or a partition?
