Internet connection
Hi,
Sorry if this post is in the wrong place! My internet at home is broken. The modem lights are all on and it seems to be working. When I check the connection it seems to be connected but I cant get onto the internet itself of download my anti-virus. I have run a virus check nothing came up, I have tried to repair the connection and this seems to do nothing. The other day I got on fine and then it went off again. I tried to trace my steps but I had done nothing different than normal. Its driving me mad, anyone got any ideas? The help would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

Re: Internet connection
Welcome to TSF!
Here are a couple of things that can disconnect your internet connection. The most common one is a Thunder storm. What I would like you to do is a power cycle. To do this first shut everything down and unplug your modem and or router. second wait about 3 - 5 minutes, then plug only your modem in. Let it boot all the way up. Next once that is all booted up like normal, plug your router in if you have one (if you don't have one then don't worry about this step). Fourth turn your computer on. Let it load all the way up to your desktop, and let everything load. Once you have your computer all set open your web-browser and see if you are able to get to like www.google.com. If you are able to then your are all set. If you aren't able to get to google, then I need you to close your browser, and then open command pompt. Start > run > cmd. This will open a black box if you aren't familiar with it. Once it loads up I would like you to type: "ipconfig /all" without "". This will give you a lot of information. If you would copy all of this information and post it up here that would be great. Next, I would like you to (in command) type "ping www.google.com" then hit enter. This will try to ping or reach that website. It will give you some information after 4 tries, if you could copy that information too, thanks! After that I would like you to type: "ping 64.233.169.147" then hit enter. This will try to reach google by ip and then give you the results. If you could copy that and post it up here, that would be great too. I know that this is a lot of information that may or may not be new to you, but, it will give us a better grip of what your connection is like. Also, what type of connection is it, dial-up, dsl, cable, or wireless? Cheers!

Re: Internet connection
If you're running linux, which I assume you are - then replace command prompt with terminal.
Use ifconfig instead of ipconfig - the connection you're looking for will probably be ETH0 or WLAN0 It might also be worth checking that your router is connected to your ISP properly. you can check this by navigating to your gateway (usually 192.168.0.1 or similar) logging in and testing the connection, or clicking connect. |
