Re: I can't watch dvds and i have no wireless internet connection
For the wireless card, we need to know what type of card it is. To get the information we need, open a terminal (should be Terminal in Ubuntu). Type sudo lspci, then post the output from that back here.
For the DVD's, what do you mean you can't read DVD's? Is a specific program not reading DVD's or the computer itself? I'm assuming they worked fine before you installed Ubuntu, which means the drive's ok (also means we should be able to get DVD's working in Ubuntu). If the DVD's just aren't appearing on your desktop, try opening MPlayer or VLC (I don't know what's installed by default with Ubuntu) and playing the DVD. If you don't have either, I'd try MPlayer first. Both can be installed with Synaptic, apt-get or another package manager (if Ubuntu switched to something other than Synaptic - apt-get should always work though). It might just be a problem with the automounting program.

Re: I can't watch dvds and i have no wireless internet connection
Ubuntu came with Totem, which I also had problems with. I removed it via synaptic and downoaded mplayer, also via synaptic, and it works very well. Might need win32 codecs pkg also, depending on what you are doing.

Re: I can't watch dvds and i have no wireless internet connection
I am guessing that gallup doesn't have the correct codecs to watch the dvd on his computer. Here is a website that will allow you to get the Codecs. The only thing is that this isn't exactly kosher. So, if you are a person that likes everything to be by the book then this won't work for you. But other wise you will be set.
Cheers!

Re: I can't watch dvds and i have no wireless internet connection
sorry about getting back to you, I had to get rid of the laptop, it was on it's last legs and repairing it just wasn't worth it so changed over to my new desktop. With the desktop i have a similar problem, Movies work fine but i still can't connect to the internet with my wireless adapter. I have a linksys PCI wireless-g adapter with speed boost.

Re: I can't watch dvds and i have no wireless internet connection
Some additional information may help us figure out the wireless card. To get the information we need, open a terminal (should be Terminal in Ubuntu). Type sudo lspci, then post the output from that back here.

Re: I can't watch dvds and i have no wireless internet connection
The last line of that output is what wireless device you have. Broadcom is not known for their Linux support, but there are some options.
An in kernel driver: b43/bcm43xx. http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 If the above doesn't work, you could try ndiswrapper. I don't use either, so I don't know how to configure them. I suggest trying the in kernel driver first.

Re: I can't watch dvds and i have no wireless internet connection
what version of ubuntu do you have?
Ndiswrapper is really easy to install in synaptic, i think the ubuntu 8.04 install cd comes with ndiswrapper. You can use synaptic to install from a cd. I used ndiswrapper for a trendnet card and it was simpler to install in ubuntu then in xp. |
