Operating System cause crash?
Ok my computer is still restarting I replaced the CPU and Motherboard still restarts before it reaches POST. So since it is not the hardware could it be the Operating System? because I pre-installed the Operating System on the HDD before I moved it to my new one because I don't have enough IDE slots for the CD-Drive and HDD. OS = Ubuntu 32Bit until I can afford Windows XP SP2 So I think it might be that the OS isn't configured correctly to the hardware causing the computer to restart. Could this be my problem? If not then I'm screwed because I have done almost everything possible like reseating RAM, disconnecting periphrials, even replacing the CPU and MOBO so I have no idea

Re: Operating System cause crash?
Ask this question over in the Hardware part of this forum.
If your machine is not getting to the POST (Power On Self Test), then this has to do with hardware compatibilities and the BIOS. Don't give up. Something on your mother board has its timing setup wrong. I would unplug everything on your mother board except the graphics card and see if you can get thru the POST. Unplug your HD, CDROM, floppy, USBs and sound. Get it to boot through this minimal system, then start adding peripherals back (one at a time). If it boots through POST, eventually you should get the error message "SYSTEM DISK NOT FOUND". Get one things running at a time. You might have to reset your motherboard by shorting out the BIOS so that it will forget everything it knows and go back to. It is called on my board "clearing the CMOS jumper". Every board has one. You might of hadto resort to using it if you over clocked your motherboard and it freezes up on you. |

Re: Operating System cause crash?
I did post it in the building forum but the forum or someone moved it here for some reason. I tested my power supply and it was fine. I made sure everything was compatible when I bought it. I'll try unplugging the periphrials again and if that doesn't work, I'll try buying a CD-ROM drive then put my HDD back in the other computer and format it THEN try to boot with a fresh HDD and then use my live Ubuntu CD. I've never overclocked anything because I can't even get it to POST. I'll try these but I don't think it's going to work but you are more help than the people on the Hardware forum. I'm only going to try clearing the CMOS if it's the ONLY thing left.

Re: Operating System cause crash?
No operating system code is running until after the POST. So I doubt the OS is causing an issue.
To be sure of what's happening, is the computer restarting before POST, at the POST screen, or slightly after POST? It sounds like it's happening before POST, which means a hardware problem.

Re: Operating System cause crash?
Before POST no beeps and nothing on the screen. So about 2-4 seconds after I turn it on it just restarts then repeats over and over.

Re: Operating System cause crash?
Have you tested to be sure the RAM is ok? Even if the seating is ok, a bad set of RAM can cause odd problems.

Re: Operating System cause crash?
I don't really have any way to test the RAM but my friend said that it sounds like the motherboard is shorting out against the case so I'm going to fix that then if it doesn't work I'll test the RAM some how.

Re: Operating System cause crash?
I agree that, from the description, I would look at a short or the RAM. A short usually will not get any activity other than fans. So, in order of importance, RAM, processor, video. RAM or video are more likely than cpu. A bad cpu will show up after post. RAM ad video can prevent post.

Re: Operating System cause crash?
Ok what you said about that fans that sounds like whats happening because only the LEDs and fans start (nothing on screen) then it just restarts after 2-4 seconds and sometimes after it restarts it doesn't even take 1 seconds for it to restart again so the time is kinda random so I'm going to fix any possible shorts today and try again.
