OS: Fedora 8
|
Hi.
I'm a new linux user. Just finished to install Fedora 8 for the first time. when my computer starts it doesn't get to the graphical interface, but to the textual interface. when i tried to force the X to start, i got a green unreadable screen and had to reboot. I guess there is something wrong with the graphic driver. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS graphic card. I've downloaded from another computer the correct driver from NVIDIA's site, but i have no idea how to reach my disk-on-key from the textual interface. My friend told me to reset the graphical driver so i could at least work from the GUI, but i even dont know how to do that. i will appreciate any help on the matter. i did try to find out help on the matter on the fedora site but didn't find a thing, i guess it's too basic for them... Many thanks, Josh. |

Re: how to reset graphic driver from textual interface?
Check your error logs in /var/logs. Usually Fedora would put start x, and then put up the X login screen. At least you can log in.
Check this line in /etc/inittab: id:5:initdefault: Make sure your id is set to 5, and not 3. However, check your errors first. You may need to go in and edit your X configuration. There are others wiser than I who can guide you in that.

Re: how to reset graphic driver from textual interface?
The X11 config file is "/etc/X11/xorg.conf". I think I would try to un-install the nvidia driver. Get it to run first in pure vga (very ugly but it will work). Next I would then find the right driver for it. This way you get a working gui first.
Try this first. From a text screen update the Fedora Core 8. If you get the latest drivers, the install disk is what was distributed when Core * was released, it may magically fix your problem. There have been a lot of fixes since early November, including three nvidia driver updates for my own machine. So run: "yum -y update" as superuser. To become superuser type in "su" and type in the superuser password you entered during the install. Then when the update is done reboot. When the nvidia driver goes by during the install, write down the name so if there is trouble you can uninstall it and go back to a simple, ugly vga. Good luck. |
