Fedora Core 6 repeatedly dying?
![]() I just recently put together a new computer from TigerDirect, and it's running with a NVidia nForce 680iLT SLI motherboard, Pentium Core2 Duo Processor, Ultra Xwind CPU fan, two case fans (Air flow from front to back), Two nVidia 8400GS graphics cards (SLI enabled with split frame rendering), onboard sound, 2 gigs of RAM (Corsair, built in heat sinks), and a 360 gb SATA drive. I installed Fedora Core 6 on it, and have it also installed on another, older, crappier HP computer (Pre-built a1000y, not much extra that can be added). The HP computer never crashes, and I've had it on/logged in for somewhere around 6 days. The new one I just put together, however, seems to crash every few minutes to several hours, seemingly randomly. Programs installed on this comp: WINE, Xfire (WINE program, Windows Gaming Chat), ijji Gunz (Gotta figure out how to make that work, though, since it requires IE6), Starsiege: Tribes (1998 FPS, WINE program), Quake 2 (+ Quake 2 Evolved, run through WINE), ndiswrapper for the wireless internet, and all of the programs that came with the operating system. It simply freezes, and might have a bit of a sound loop if I'm playing a game of some sort. CTRL-ALT-Del for restarting doesn't work at this point, and the only thing I can do is restart it/shut it down with the button on the front of the case. Any ideas on why this thing keeps crashing/freezing would be appreciated. |

Re: Fedora Core 6 repeatedly dying?
Run Yum and get the latest updates. Fedora Core 6 is about a year out (it is now up to Core 8). It might take a while to get the update to finish since it will crash every few minutes. I would suggest:
1) yum check-update (pick out the kernel update out of the huge list - its aphabetical) 2) yum -y kernel.??? (where kernel.??? is the exact name from the list. Install the kernel and reboot. It may take several tries to get it all down). 3) yum -y update (to download the rest of updates) I think your new MB is about year and a half out from the current Fedora kernel. Use your old HP to download the new kernel. Good luck. |
