Re: Howto guide to cronjob server

What distro are you using?

cron is usually installed by default.
open a terminal and type crontab -l (lowercase L)

Also try entering man cron into a terminal

Re: Howto guide to cronjob server

Anybody can edit and a cron job to run under their user privileges. Just enter "crontab -e". After the job is finished exist and save. Remember that the default editor is "vi", a very intimidating editor. Only root can add super user cron jobs. I think the "EDITOR" environment variable can be changed to point to your favorite editor.

crond is always installed. Its granularity is every one minute it will execute. The options on the time are varied. I have one that run every minute to make sure that my network interface to the Internet is always running (I use comcast.net). If the link is down it tries to reestablish the connection. To start the Ethernet cards is a superuser privilege, so only root can do that.

I don't know if there is gui interface for the cron daemon out there. There probably is, everything else has been gui'ized.
