Vista / Samba / networking
I am running debian (without X) and have updated to samba version 3 (without updating the kernel). Whilst updating to samba 3 meant that I could access files on the debian server from a vista laptop when I load microsoft documents and excel spreadsheets office 2007 will not display the text inside the microsoft program (in other words microsoft office sees the file and loads it however come up with a blank screen after loading the file)
I can read/write a text file but not the microsoft files [I tested] (or may be large file issue ?) Is this microsoft being a !@#!#%@ or is there a fix for this. BTW: What is the procedure for updating the kernel And which version is the most stable ? |

Re: Vista / Samba / networking
I am probably wrong, but I read that M$ was updating some of their file formats so that you couldn't go "back". If you had a spreadsheet created under windows 95 in 1995 and now loaded it into the 2007 spreadsheet program, it wouldn't write it back out in the 1995 format. The upgrade came as a patch to some of their "MSWord group of programs". Maybe (just maybe) you were bitten by this.
If M$ screwed up the smb protocol, I think that all platforms would have broken. Try reading the file in "open office" on the Linux server. |
