Ubuntu Networking/Server
I am new to linux, i have just installed linux ubuntu7.10 desktop and wondering how i could take advantage of some of the networking features. I have 3wireless laptops and one other desktop that all run WinXP pro. I would like to use my linux box some what as a server for all my files and music. Could someone explain how i could possibly do this?

Re: Ubuntu Networking/Server
You need to set up Samba (smb/nmb) on the Linux. Samba serves/shares Linux files into the M$ world. There a GUI interface programs for setup, but I don't know there names. I just edit the text configure files in /etc/samba (for Fedora 8.0). My way here is just the very simplest, put your files and music into directories/folder and share them using samba. There are probably some very good "wiki's" that tell how to setup Samba.
I have seen some talk and references of using Apache web server to serve up music via and HTML/broadcasting type interface so that you could even get your music served to you at work. But it was to complicated for my "simple" wants. |

Re: Ubuntu Networking/Server
Use Samba.
1. Install Go to System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager Search for samba Tick the box, mark for installation Click apply 2. Share your files Go to System>Administration>Shared Folders Your mileage may vary. Sometimes you get problems with passwords and/or workgroups. I don't know if that's a problem on the windows side or the linux side. /Janne |

Janus, No kidding. I don't grok this either. Using "smbclient" which is the Linux side tar look alike, even leaves me confused. I set up passwords on Samba and Linux (and they are the same password) and it still doesn't work... Sometime the "guest" account works better than a real login. |
