independent boot xp linux software idea
Guyes,
I have an extra 80 gb hdd, with it i do all my experiment jobs.I use several OSes. Now when i format c: for some reason, i lose all my OSes. So i need individual booting. So my linux + windows; or xp + vista is not affected by one another. ![]() Let me make it a little more clear. I can make several primary partition. Then make one active and put an OS on it. ex. make c: active and put XP on it make d: active and put vista on it and on the boot screen i want to see, which partition to be taken as active. if i take c: then XP is selected. if i take d: vista is selected. as simple as that. Is there any software or tutorial or anything like that that can help me doing this. What is the idea for individual booting of XP+linux. i am reyally confused. But i reyally want to do it. thankyou |

Re: independent boot xp linux software idea
Forget about terms like C and D drive. What do these mean? They are meaningless. C drive is what windows usually calls its first partition, letters A and B were reserved for floppy drives, you can have 26 partitions on windows, letters A-Z. Drive letters in windows can be re-assigned, D drive could be second primary partition, or it could be the first logical drive on an extended partition... thats why its meaningless.
All you need to do is install one windows system on your computer, as driver support is much more developed and advanced in XP, I would not use Vista. In windows right click my computer, manage, then drive management. From here you can resize your drive C to create spare space on the drive for linux. Then you need a linux distribution. For a newbie PCLinuxOS 2007, or Suse 10.3 are going to be the easiest. Ubuntu 7.10 is also a good choice. Use google, download the iso and burn it and boot with it in your cdrom. There are instructions on how to create a permanent install with all distros, but you will find very active user forums for pclinuxos and suse using google. When you install linux the usual choice is a bootloader called Grub (GRand Unified Bootloader). Grub can load windows, and linux, freebsd, solaris and is a highly capable and configurable bootloader. Your first steps now are reserving space for linux, chosing a distribution and installing it. Dont think about installing XP+Vista+Linux you are not ready for that yet. |
