[SOLVED] Just insalled Ubuntu...

Hi guys,

I finally got around to installing Linux. , and have a few questions..

What are some good games for Ubuntu?

Would this Antivirus work with Ubuntu?

http://www.free-av.com/

The file extension is .tar.gz.?

Is there any other software that is worth installing?

Cheers.

Re: Just insalled Ubuntu...

Greetings!

Congratulations on your first linux install.

You don't really need to download an antivirus for linux- there aren't very many, if any, that are a threat. Just don't run as the admin (root) all the time, be vigilant about what you download from whom, and you'll be just fine.

.tar.gz is linux's most common archive format. '.tar' is a tapearchive, and gz is gzip, a compression routine.

And yes, there's plenty worth installing. Check out the package manager synaptic- much of the software you'd want is stored in repositories, so you don't even have to jump around on websites to find it.

Re: Just insalled Ubuntu...

I'm a fan of Neverball, but there are plenty of other games. Fox's suggestion to look through Synaptic is exactly what I'd recommend myself. Another place to go for games specifically is http://www.happypenguin.org/

Like Fox said, viruses aren't much of a concern. If you must have an antivirus program, there's ClamAV. I remember seeing that there are one or two others, but didn't pay much attention since viruses aren't a big problem.

Hello Fox and shuuhen

Thank you both for you advice. .

Sorry to be a bit of a pain but I uninstalled Ubuntu as I couldnt get the internet to work. But I know have PCLinux and I personally think it is so much better than Ubuntu.

This is inbuilt into PClinux I think, so I am just searching through it now.

Yes, to install Skype open Synaptic Package Manager, hit the search box and search for Skype, right click on it and select "Mark for installation". Then start a new search for VLC Media Player, I'm pretty sure it's there, but not positive. Mark that for installation too, if you find it. When you're done, hit the "Apply" button and wait for it to download and install. Once it's finished, look through the programs menu for them.

Re: Just insalled Ubuntu...

If you can find what you want in Synaptic then everything's cool, it's when you can't find what you want and have to compile it that it can get tricky.
