Ubuntu Sys Reqs
Hi all,
I'm trying to install Linux on this old Acer Travelmate - Intel Pent III 498mhz 128mb ram 15g hd Wondering what's Ubuntu's System Requirements? ---story--- I downloaded Xubuntu from this link, burned it onto a CD, and put it in just to see if the LiveCD feature works. Turns out the files are kinda weird; there's no autorun, no exe files, almost nothing. I rebooted and like magic the Xubuntu boot screen appears, with options to install, run and all the stuff. I selected "Start or install Xubuntu" and a message pops up saying something like "cannot read boot cd". ---story--- I have a fully functional Ubuntu CD here but I'm not sure if it'll run on the good old laptop? |

Re: Ubuntu Sys Reqs
Hard drive is definitely big enough. I've done installs on drives as small as 4 GB (not that I recommend it).
Processor should be fast enough, but you'll want to avoid trying demanding programs like KDE and Beryl. If it seems slow, feel free to ask us about lighter window managers (fluxbox is my favorite). The RAM is lower than you generally want in a machine, but it will work. It fits the requirements for Ubuntu and Xubuntu should run at least a little faster than Ubuntu. Re: Ubuntu Sys Reqs
Enuf RAM to run Ubuntu, but not enuf to run a LiveCD. Kind of a Catch22. Need 256 at least unless you download/burn the alternate install version.

Re: Ubuntu Sys Reqs
Found the system reqs for Xubuntu: http://xubuntu.org/get#requirements
It does seem to want 192 MB RAM to install, but the alternate install disc will run with as little as 64 MB. After it's installed it will run with as little as 64 MB as well, but the 128 is much better than only 64.

Re: Ubuntu Sys Reqs
I tried installing w/ Xubuntu Alternate CD but it just doesn't work. I got all the way past the keyboard, hardware, language, user password, until it reaches "install base system". Then it failed to install the base system. Would a Ubuntu Alternate work?
