Ubuntu xserver problems
Hello all,
I'm new here. I was directed here for help so hopefully you guys will know what I'm doing wrong. I"m off at college and I have been hoping to be 'Microsoft free' on my desktop (my laptop requires windows-regrettably). Anyways so I wanted to make the switch easy so I installed Ubuntu into a partition on my desktop (windows xp is on another partition, which I will clear out if I can get Ubuntu working). Anyways I've been attempting to learn the 'ropes' of Unbuntu when someone told me I should get something called "compiz-fusion," it looked cool so I thought I would give it a shot. Long story short-I messed up. I think the problem that started it all was me trying to get a driver for my video card off nvidia's site. Now it boots to command line and tells me something about xserver being broken. I tried using the line "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" that I found here, but it sends me thru something that looks like reconfiguration, only to have it give me errors afterward. The errors I get (there's a screen full of text and I picked out these errors) "failure to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libglx.so" "failure to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7)" "failed to open a framebuffer device, consult warnings and/or erros above for possible reasons" and "unable to find a valid framebuffer device." I found out later that I should have used "envy" for my video driver, but well it seems too late. I must admit, I'm in over my head here, I know computer hardware pretty well, but for software I'm pretty well lost. My goal here is to have Ubuntu working with compiz-fusion going too. My setup: ECS KN1 SLI Lite eVGA 7900GT 2 HDD's one 200gb and one 250gb. AMD Athlon 64 x2 4800+ Enermax Liberty. Hopefully I didn't forget anything.... Thanks ~Jeff EDIT: I forgot to mention, Everything had been working fine before I tried to get an nvidia driver. I figured it would work ok since my brother has Ubuntu running compiz-fusion on his desktop and that's how he did it ( I guess I missed something somewhere). Re: Ubuntu xserver problems
I'm not sure how to try and reinstall the driver (like link 1 there is talking about) from the command line (I don't know how that would work). As for link 2, the trouble shooting there seems like something that's not helpful other than the command 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ' which I've already tried (see first post).
