My System

New Vid Card and Gnome goes bye bye

Interesting problem:

I was not happy with the very old vid card in my system (GF4 MX440 - 32 MB I think) I picked up a Visiontek X1300 (ATI Radeon 256 MB pci express x16) for all of about $40 just to experiment. I installed it and fired it up. So far so good. It seems to be loading just like normal. I can see the checks as it scrolls through setting up the system. Yeah.l I log onto my default desktop - Gnome. Oh oh. black screen...just the tail end of what looks to be the word "login". OK maybe it needs a cycle or two to settle down. I try using my user name and PW but it goes right to the normal system login screen every time.

What now?

May be try switching desktops to KDE. I don't know why I think this will work but I'm experimenting right? So at the next login screen I change over to KDE and guess what? Yup! Everything works perfectly. I'm typing on it right now at the maximum resolution my monitor can handle (1280 x 1024).

So I'm wondering why KDE works while Gnome doesn't?

Because KDE is better than Gnome

On topic, was your original installation of Kubuntu or Ubuntu? Like, did you install Ubuntu and then install the KDE or did you install Kubuntu and then install Gnome?

I installed Ubuntu and used it exclusively for some months. Then about two months ago I installed KDE and Kubuntu seems to have come along too. For example, I now see the blue "Kubuntu" name while the comp scrolls through its start up routine. But then it reverts to the orange/tan Ubuntu sign in screen...

Did you reconfigure the system for the new graphics card?

If by reconfigure you mean going to System Settings>Display>Hardware>Graphics>Configure (all in Admin mode) then yes - at least I tried to...All options came back with "Sorry this configuration ...doesn't appear to work."
