just got Ubuntu

Let me throw this one out to yall. I just got Ubuntu today and I am already having problems. I pop the cd in the drive and restart. It loads the Live CD and looks ok except my dadgum keyboard won't work. What the....... Anyway, I just want to know if Ubuntu is picky about hardware or is there anything special I have to do and before anyone asks, the keyboard does indeed work as I am using it to type this message. If this helps, when the cd loads and goes to the menu, I can use the keyboard until i select run/install and then it goes kapoot. Any help anyone?

Re: just got Ubuntu

Is it a USB keyboard? If so, try a USB to PS/2 adapter. Also try another USB port.

Re: just got Ubuntu

No, it is a standard PS/2 keyboard. Nothing special, just a normal keyboard. It will let me select the install from the menu, but as soon as the live cd starts loading, the keyboard goes dead. It has Compaq's logo on if that helps.

Re: just got Ubuntu

Very interesting. Do you have a USB keyboard you can try?

Re: just got Ubuntu

Not on me. If I was still in Tech School, then I could have borrowed on from my former instructor. Have I come across something rare in Ubuntu? I have been know to have bad luck with new things I try.

Re: just got Ubuntu

Try just rebooting. See if it will pick it up again.

I would try to borrow a USB keyboard from a friend. I am willing to bet it will work.

Does your mouse work?

Re: just got Ubuntu

I have tried rebooting three times and every time the same thing. Yes, my mouse works, but to think about it, it is a USB mouse. Are my PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports not supported by Ubuntu?

Re: just got Ubuntu

That might be the problem. It will probably end up being fixed once you reinstall and all the drivers are loaded though.

Re: just got Ubuntu

How can I install Ubuntu onto my slave hard drive without running the liveCD? I can't install from the liveCD because of my keyboard problem. Is there a way to install it to the slave drive from windows?

Re: just got Ubuntu

You could also try the alternate install CD and install directly from that rather then booting from the live CD/DVD. Download it from Ubuntu's web site.

Thats two.

Where did you get the CD you have now?

See if you can download and burn it on a friend's computer.

Re: just got Ubuntu

I got the cd directly from Canonical as a free CD that you can request. As for downloading, I'll see what I can do.
Thanks for the help.
