Re: whats the difference between linux, unix and sun solarities?

Nobody's using Unix, and very few people are using Solaris, on their home PC's.
So you're left with Linux. PCLOS, any of the Ubuntu's, MEPIS, Mint Linux, Suse, are all popular, user-friendly choices. There are other popular ones. If you're just getting started, pick a widely-used distro because you will have questions. You are much more likely to get a response if you post a question regarding PCLOS than a thinly-used distro like Sabayon or Arch.

Re: whats the difference between linux, unix and sun solarities?

I'd start with Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Both are easier for users new to Linux. There are plenty of other distributions that you might want to try later, but both Ubuntu and Kubuntu are great for getting started with Linux. Plenty of people stick with one of those two after they are very experienced with Linux because it's easy for them to have a stable and working system.

The other Unix-like operating systems (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, etc.) have different designs that are preferable in certain situations, but almost everything you learn on Linux will help you with the others. Mac OS X and Linux are arguably the two most popular Unix-like operating systems for personal use. They are both also commonly used in businesses.

Re: whats the difference between linux, unix and sun solarities?

Unix is the Old Old Old Old version. It's proprietary and almost nobody uses it... except high up corperate users. Slaris was made for Sun's SPARC Arch, it is out for x86 now, but it's not as well supported.

Linux is what you'll want, and I recommend ubuntu

Re: whats the difference between linux, unix and sun solarities?

Not really, cause while GNOME is a little bit processor intensive, there's also fluxbox, KDE, and a lot of other window managers. IF you have a sweet system, you should check out beryl, it's an Awesome program that give very special effects to your desktop.

You've got plenty of computer. If you have an ATI graphics card, that might cause trouble. Nvidia and Intel onboard video is pretty much trouble-free, or at least drivers are available.
