You could be opening up a can of worms. I tried Linux to placate my Linux friends, but I've gone back to Windows and wouldn't use anything else. I shall now sit back and wait for the poisoned arrows.

Re: is linux a good alternitive

Why not try it and see
Download a live cd version and run it (you don't have to install it) and see what it is like

Re: is linux a good alternitive

The trouble is (as far as I can make out) is that there are hundreds of distros of Linux, each with different merits and de-merits. They all need add-ons (not necessarily free BTW) to make them work the way you want, whereas Windows has got it all built in. I'm sure I'm going to get shot down for this, but that's my view. I shall now go and hide.

You pay for windows to start with.
Agreed windows does have things built in to it, that Ive needed and had to install in Linux.

Linux is not as good as Windows, and never will be.
At times Linux is better, but alot of programs I use and prefer to use, have no Linux versions.
Unless developers move from windows, to linux then Windows will always be on top.

But, if you compare Windows/Linux to a Mac, then personally a Mac will always come out worse. It has even less support than Linux, don't let this put you off.
Linux is a good alternative, and with Dell selling machines with Ubuntu it should be come more popular.

You mean like a decent word processor? Nope.
Maybe a secure web browser or e-mail client? Hmmm, doesn't have that.
How about a full-featured image editor like GIMP? Doesn't have that either.

Windows doesn't come with malware either, but you get that for free just by using it.

Windows is ubiquitous, so all the manufacturers write all of their software for it. That's about all it has over Linux. And we're slowly seeing improvement there.

It's still on my system and I play around with it now and again just to keep Carsey happy.
